ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The no. 9 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Mount Aloysius 107-77 in the M Club Classic on Monday night. The win improved the Purple Raiders to 12-0, which extended the best start in program history.
Mount Union (12-0) was led by sophomore guard Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake), junior forward Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington), and senior forward Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial), each of whom delivered a strong performance. Casenhiser scored 21 points, shooting 58.3-percent (7-of-12) from the field and 60-percent (3-of-5) from three-point range. Farrington had a strong performance inside, contributing 15 points with an impressive shooting percentage of 66.67% (4-of-6) from the field. Moore also showcased his scoring ability, adding 15 points while shooting 60-percent (6-of-10) from the field and 60-percent (3-of-5) from beyond the arc. Freshman Cam Weekley (Massillon / Massillon Jackson) also scored a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Mount Aloysius was led by junior guard Donovan Bass-Briscoe, who scored 13 points, and sophomore forward Senique Jenkins, who also scored 13 points and grabbed an impressive 18 rebounds.
The Purple Raiders started the game strong, taking an early lead of 21-14 with 11:55 remaining in the first half. They then went on a 14-4 run, extending their lead to 35-18 with 7:56 left in the half. The Mounties fought back, going on an 11-6 run to reduce the deficit to 41-29. However, Mount Union finished the half with a 15-5 run, leading 56-34 at halftime.
In the second half, the Purple Raiders did not let up, outscoring Mount Aloysius 51-43. Junior big man Shaun Vaden (Cleveland / Cornerstone Christian) really stepped up for the Purple Raiders, scoring 9 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and recording four blocks in only 14 minutes played.
The Raiders are home again tomorrow when they host Calvin on Tuesday, December 30 at 3 p.m. on the second day of the M Club Classic in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
