Women's Basketball: Raiders Wrap Up Non-Conference Slate With Win Over Thiel

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union women's basketball team defeated Thiel in non-conference action 80-46 on Saturday evening.

The Purple Raiders (10-3) were led by junior Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) who scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting while fellow junior Reese Triplett (New Philadelphia / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) added in eight points.

The Tomcats (5-6) were led by Issy Green who scored a team-high 14 points and Emily Betsinger who added in nine.

Thiel jumped out to an early 7-3 lead to start the first quarter before Mount Union would answer with a quick 9-0 run over 57 seconds of game time to take a 12-7 lead with 6:14 to play in the quarter. The Tomcats would come back to tie the game at 12 apiece before the Raiders would close the quarter on a massive 21-1 run to take a 33-13 lead into the second quarter.

The Raiders would stay hot to start the second quarter, opening the quarter with an 18-2 run over the first five and a half minutes of action to push their lead to 51-15. Both teams would trade baskets back and forth over the final four and a half minutes of the half, giving Mount Union a 57-22 lead heading into the halftime break. After being tied at 12 apiece with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter, the Raiders would go on to outscore the Tomcats 43-10 over the final 14:16 of the first half.

Mount Union would open the second half with a quick 5-2 spurt before the Tomcats would answer by outscoring the Raiders 10-5 over the remainder of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 67-34, heading into the fourth and final quarter. Thiel wouldn't be able to get closer than 26 over the course of the fourth quarter as Mount Union would go on to win 80-46.

The Raiders are home again next when they host Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Marietta on Wednesday, January 7 at 7 p.m. at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.
