NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Muskingum 86-83 in double overtime in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.
The Purple Raiders (15-7, 12-3 OAC) had four players score in double figures with sophomore
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a 22-point, 18-rebound double-double with senior
Marcus Steele (Solon) adding in 18 points. Junior
Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) and freshman
Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake) both scored 13 points to round out the Raiders in double digits.
The Fighting Muskies (12-10, 10-5 OAC) were led by Owen Emig who scored a game-high 28 points, Zaveon Croff who added in 14 and Luken Hill who scored 13 points.
Muskingum jumped out to an early 7-0 lead with 18:26 remaining in the first half, they would maintain that lead over the next three minutes of action before Mount Union would answer with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 14 apiece with just over 13 minutes left to play in the first half. Both teams would trade baskets over the next nine minutes of game time before the Muskies would go on a 13-4 run over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 42-35 lead into the halftime break.
Muskingum would maintain their lead over the first couple of minutes of the second half before the Raiders would go on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 49-45 with just over 13 minutes left to play. The Muskies would quickly push the lead back out to nine however before Mount Union would go on a massive 18-2 run over 7:32 of game time to take a seven point, 63-56 lead with 3:54 remaining in the game. Muskingum would claw their way back, answering with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 65 with just 19 seconds remaining in the game and sent the game to overtime.
The Muskies would jump out to a five-point lead and would maintain a slim lead for the entire course of the overtime period until Casenhiser hit a three at the buzzer to tie the game at 75 and send the game to a second overtime.
In the second overtime period, Muskingum would once again take an early lead before the Raiders would come storming back in the final minute, ending the game on a 6-0 run including the go-ahead basket by junior
Dante Collier (Columbus / Licking Heights) with 33 second remaining and the exclamation point by Moore with less than a second to play to give Mount Union the 86-83.
The Raiders are on the road again next when they travel to Tiffin for an OAC matchup against Heidelberg on Saturday, February 15 at 3 p.m.
