WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Mount Union baseball team played two games on Sunday at Westfield Grand Parks in Westfield, Indiana. They began with a matchup against Monmouth College, securing a 12-6 victory. In the second game, Mount Union faced Rose-Hulman and lost with a score of 9-7 in the 10th inning.
The Purple Raiders began the season strong on their road trip, achieving a 2-1 record.
In game one, sophomore outfielder Luke Ickes (Green, Ohio / Green) started the scoring with a three-run blast deep to right field, hitting his first career home run. On the day, Ickes went three for three with a home run and a career-high six RBIs. The offense for the Purple Raiders was dominant, scoring two or more runs in four different innings.Â
Graduate first baseman Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, PA. / Monroe) had an impressive performance, going four for five with two extra-base hits and two RBIs. Freshman catcher
Daniel Tome III (Lakewood, Ohio / St. Edwards) made a strong impression in his first collegiate start, showcasing his skills behind the plate and going two for five at the plate with two RBIs.
Senior pitcher Brady Hansen (Beaver, PA. / Beaver Area) made the start, going four innings with five strikeouts while allowing four runs, three of which were earned. Sophomore pitcher Ty Dennison (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) earned his first win of the season, pitching five innings out of the bullpen and recording three strikeouts while allowing two runs.
In game two, Mount Union experienced a surge in offense during the seventh inning while trailing 5-0. The Purple Raiders scored five runs in that inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing error by the left fielder. In the bottom of the eighth, graduate Jaired Lehman (Monroeville PA. / Gateway) came through with a two-run RBI double, giving the Purple Raiders a 7-6 lead. The Raiders gave up a run in the top of the ninth and fell in extra-innings, allowing two runs in the tenth.
Mount Union will play Washington & Jefferson on the road Wednesday.Â
