The Mount Union baseball team (2-2) traveled to Washington, Pennsylvania, to take on the Washington and Jefferson Presidents. The Purple Raiders made a late comeback, but ultimately fell one run short in a 5-4 loss.
Washington and Jefferson (2-0) were receiving national votes in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.
Starting pitcher junior Anthony Warner ( Louisville, Ohio / Louisville) had an excellent start in his season debut for the Purple Raiders, pitching six innings while recording four strikeouts. He allowed six hits, one walk, and only one run. Notably, Warner did not give up his lone run until the sixth inning and managed to force three groundouts and 11 flyouts.
Offensively, freshman Chris Tsouras went 1 for 2 on the day with a walk and recorded his first RBI as a Purple Raider. In the ninth inning, Mount Union was trailing 5-2 but managed to score two runs in a late rally effort. Freshman catcher Daniel Thome III had a strong performance, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing the score to 5-4. Thome III went two for four on the day, tallying two doubles and an RBI.
Mount Union's game next game will be Saturday against Keystone.
