UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's men's basketball team lost in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game 82-69 against John Carroll on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (18-9, 14-4 OAC) had four players score in double figures with fifth-year
Christian Parker (Canton / GlenOak) leading the way with 19 points, junior
Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) added in 14 points. Senior
Marcus Steele (Solon) and sophomore
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) would round out the Raiders in double digits, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Blue Streaks (22-5, 15-3 OAC) were led by Henry Raynor who scored a game-high 22 points, Will Yontek who added in 21 and Luke Frazier who scored 17 points.
Mount Union would jump out to an early 14-6 lead over the first 4:36 of action before John Carroll would answer with a quick 7-0 run to cut the lead down to one with 14:10 remaining in the first half. The Raiders would maintain their narrow lead of the next 3:20 of game time before a quick 8-2 run over the next 1:41 would push the lead back out to six at 26-20 with just over nine minutes to play in the half. Both teams would trade baskets over the final nine minutes of the half with neither able to gain much of an edge as Mount Union would take a narrow 36-33 lead into the halftime break.
The Raiders would open the second half with two quick baskets to push the lead out to eight before the Blue Streaks would answer with an 18-5 run over the next 5:52 of action to claim a 51-46 lead with 12:41 left to play in the game. John Carroll would push their lead out to 11 over the next two and a half minutes before Mount Union would answer with an 8-2 run to cut the lead down to 64-59 with six minutes remaining in the game. John Carroll would go on to outscore Mount Union 18-10 over the final six minutes of the game and would go on to win 82-69.
Farrington was named to the All-Tournament team for his performance throughout the tournament as he scored a career-high 25 points in the semifinal against Heidelberg and scored 10 in the championship game against John Carroll.
The Purple Raiders finish the season with an 18-9 overall record, finishing 14-4 in the OAC and made a trip to their fourth consecutive OAC Tournament Championship game.
