Softball: Raiders Sweep Opening Day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team swept their opening day of the season on their Spring Break trip in Florida, beating Transylvania 2-0 in their first game and beating Dominican 4-3 in the second game.

The Purple Raiders (2-0) would strike first in their first game of the day when freshman Allison Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) stole home in the top half of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. They would then add another run in the top of the fourth when senior Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit a single up the middle that scored junior Abbie Gayner (Akron / Revere) to stretch the lead to two runs.

The Pioneers (3-1) wouldn't have an answer over the final three innings as the Raiders would go on to win 2-0.

Junior Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and threw a complete game shutout, giving up just one hit and striking out 10.

Mount Union would once again strike first in their second game of the day when junior Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) hit an RBI single that brought in senior Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. They would then add three more runs in the bottom half of the third, the first coming off an RBI single from junior Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) that scored Jones then, Reicosky stole home for the second run and Sickafoose hit an RBI single to right field to bring in junior Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to make the lead four runs.

The Stars (6-4) would answer with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning with RBIs coming from Gillian Czubernat and Emme Slavens to cut the lead down to two runs. Dominican would cut into the lead again in the fifth inning when Isabella Olmos stole home, however that is as close as they would get as the Raiders would go on to win 4-3.

Freshman Emma Reemsnyder (Canton / GlenOak) made her first career start for the Raiders and picked up her first career win, throwing five innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, three earned. Sophomore Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) would come in and throw 1.2 innings in relief, giving up just three hits and striking out two. Cahill would come in to finish the game and gave up zero runs and zero hits.
