Softball: Raiders Split Road Doubleheader with Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio— Mount Union's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Wooster on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 2-1 and losing game two 4-3.

The Purple Raiders (14-10) would strike first in game one, scoring in the top of the first inning when senior Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI single that scored junior Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to take a 1-0 lead.

The Fighting Scots (8-18) would come back to tie the game in the third inning when Julia Jennings hit an RBI single, tying the game at a run apiece.

Mount Union would reclaim the lead in the top half of the fifth when junior Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison) hit an RBI single that brought in Mercer to retake the lead at 2-1. Wooster wouldn't be able to plate any runs over the remainder of the game, as the Raiders would go on to take Game 1 2-1.

Sophomore Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game one and would give up just a single run on four hits and strike out two in three innings of work. Junior Chloe Bird (Norton) came in to throw the final four innings in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one.

The Scots would strike first in game two, breaking the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Breanna Haydu hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders would tie the game in the following inning when freshman Lindsay Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) scored on a passed ball to tie the game at a run apiece. They would then claim their first lead of the game in the sixth inning, scoring two runs, with the first coming after Mercer stole home and then George hit a sacrifice fly that scored junior Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) to take a 3-1 lead.

Wooster would answer in the bottom of the seventh inning, however, scoring three runs off RBIs from Jennings, Jillian Meszaros, and Sarah Lodge to win game two 4-3.

Freshman Daniella Vecchio (Manongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) would get the start in the circle in game two and gave up one run on two hits in 3.2 innings of action. Bird would come in and throw the final 2.2 innings in relief and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits.

The Raiders host John Carroll next in their home opener on Tuesday, April 15, in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at the 23rd Street Softball Field, with game one beginning at 3 p.m. and game two following at 5 p.m.
