Women’s Basketball: Raiders Drop Defensive Battle in Ada

ADA, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team fell on the road 56-50 to Ohio Northern on Saturday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
 
The Purple Raiders (13-5, 5-4 OAC) were led by Chelsea Evanich (Alliance / Marlington) with a double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
 
Ohio Northern (6-12, 5-4 OAC) was led by Emerson Gray with 19 points.
 
Mount Union got off to a 4-0 start with a layup from Evanich and a jumper from Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights). Mount Union held Ohio Northern scoreless the first 4:32 of the game until two free throws. Ohio Northern got a lead of 6-4 but Mount Union responded with two buckets taking an 8-6 lead but Northern converted on a three-point shot taking a 9-8 lead into the second quarter.
 
In the first 2:45 of the second quarter there were six lead changes as Northern had the last one at 16-15. Northern got its largest lead of six but Bree McCabe (Massillon / Tuslaw) got Mount Union a bucket to trail 21-17. Over the final 4:55 both defenses picked up their pressure and held each other scoreless as Mount Union trailed 21-17 into the halftime break.
 
Mount Union got the first bucket in the third quarter, closing to within two but an 8-0 run for Northern gave them a 29-19 lead. Mount Union got within six on a layup from Evanich with 1:05 left in the quarter at 33-27 but Northern finished the quarter with a 5-2 run taking a nine-point lead into the final quarter.
 
Over the final quarter Mount Union couldn't get within eight points of Northern until the final minute where Conroy hit a three and Abby Muckleroy (Canfield) hit two threes but Northern converted on free throws closing out the victory.  
 
Mount Union will now remain on the road heading to Marietta on Wednesday, January 28th with a 7 pm tip off.
