ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup 76-70 in overtime against Marietta on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (10-4, 2-3 OAC) had three players score in double figures with junior
Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights) leading the way with a career-high 18 points. Junior
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) added 11 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double, while sophomore
Lily Scott (Youngstown / Ursuline) scored 10 to round out the Raiders in double digits.
The Pioneers (7-7, 2-3 OAC) were led by Kelsey Harlan who scored a game-high 21 points, Kendall Sury who scored 12 and Ava Heller who added 11 points.
After Marietta jumped out to an early 5-2 lead over the first three and a half minutes, Mount Union would come back to tie the game at six apiece with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter. The teams would trade baskets back and forth over the remainder of the quarter as the Pioneers would take a slim 19-16 lead heading to the second quarter. Marietta would open the second quarter with an 11-4 run over 5:26 of game time to push their lead out to 10 with just over four and a half minutes to play in the half. The Raiders wouldn't be able to cut the lead under double digits over the remainder of the half as the Pioneers would take a 36-24 lead into the halftime break.
Both teams would come out of the halftime break trading baskets back and forth over the first 3:48 of the half, before the Raiders would go on an 11-3 run to cut the lead down to just a six-point 46-40 lead with just over two minutes to play in the third quarter. The Pioneers would be able to maintain their lead over the final two minutes as they would head to the fourth and final quarter leading 48-42. Mount Union would open the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run over the first 2:37 of action to cut the lead to just one with just under seven and a half minutes to play in the game. The Raiders would then take the lead over the next 2:27 of game time by going on a 9-3 run to take a 58-53 lead with 4:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. Marietta would close the quarter on a 10-5 run, including hitting a game-tying three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 63. After Mount Union grabbed a quick 68-65 lead to open the overtime period, Marietta would go on to close the game on an 11-2 run over the final 3:51 to take the 76-70.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Wilmington for an OAC matchup against the Quakers on Saturday, January 10 at 4 p.m.
