ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union football team won, 27-21, over Marietta on homecoming on Saturday for its second-straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win.
Junior QB Mikey Maloney (Concord Township, OH/Painesville Riverside) threw for 341 yards (30-45) with three touchdowns, for his third straight and sixth career 300-yard game.
Junior WR Mason Ashby (North Canton, OH/North Canton Hoover) recorded his fourth-straight 100-yard game with 109 receiving and a game- and career-high two receiving touchdowns. It marks the most consecutive 100-yard receiving games by Mount Union player since Wayne Ruby Jr. in 2022.
After Marietta (3-2, 2-2 OAC) scored late in the second quarter with 31 seconds on the clock, Mount Union (3-2, 2-1 OAC) took a two-score lead with five seconds left when Maloney connected with Ashby on third down, 16 yards down the middle of the field, and Ashby dodged and weaved the rest of the way for a 54-yard touchdown. Freshman WR Brayden Harris (Northfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) and junior WR Mikey Reilly (Holbrook, NY/Sachem) helped create lanes with downfield blocks.
The Raiders led 20-7 at halftime.
Marietta got within one score with four minutes left in the third (20-14), however, Ashby answered again—this time from seven yards out with 52 seconds left to put Mount up 27-14.
The Pioneers scored at the 10:42 mark in the fourth from a Joe Tenta 34-yard pass to Nas Foster to cut the lead to 27-21. The Pioneers had the ball at the 50 under a minute to go, however, Mount Union sophomore LB Gavin Ehrhardt (Avon, OH/Avon) snagged the pass for his first career interception to seal the win.
Reilly caught his first career touchdown from 24 yards out, extending Mount Union's lead to 13-0 with 6:12 to play in the second quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 20-yard catch by, who else, Ashby on 2nd-and-33.
Ehrhardt led the Mount Union defense with a team-high eight tackles, including a half tackle for loss. Freshman Cannan McCarthy (Palm Bay, FL/Cocoa) had a team-best 1.5 tackles for loss, while junior Jahaad Williams (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had one.
Junior RB Kayden Minner (New Madrid, MO/New Madrid County Central) led the ground with 68 yards. Harris had a career-high nine catches for 76 yards.
