Men's Basketball: No. 7 Raiders Clinch OAC Regular Season Title with Win Over Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The no. 7 nationally ranked men's basketball team defeated Capital 75-63 in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday evening.

The win combined with Otterbein's loss to Ohio Northern tonight clinched the OAC Regular Season Championship and the no. 1 seed in next week's OAC Tournament for the Raiders.

The Purple Raiders (23-2, 14-2 OAC) had four players score in double figures with junior Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double. Sophomore Jack Dunbar (McMurray, Pa. / Peters Township) scored a career-high 18 points, while junior Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) scored 13 points and sophomore Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake) added 11 to round out the Raiders in double digits.

The Comets (8-16, 3-12 OAC) were led by Dallas Tucker who scored a team-high 17 points and McKane Finkenbine who scored 12 points.

Mount Union would jump out to a quick 8-4 lead over the first 3:50 of the game before Capital would go on to cut the lead to 12-10 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half. The Raiders would then go on a quick 8-2 run over the 1:51 of action to push their lead back out to eight with 9:32 to play in the half. The Comets would answer once again with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the lead down to 20-19 with 7:13 remaining in the first half. Mount Union would push their lead back out to six before Capital would once again go on a 7-0 run to claim their first lead of the game at 28-27 with just under four minutes remaining in the half. The two teams would go back and forth over the remainder of the half as the Comets would take a narrow 35-31 lead into the halftime break.

Mount Union would open the second half with an 11-5 run to reclaim the lead at 42-40 with 15:16 left to play in the game. After Capital reclaimed the lead a little over a minute later, the Raiders would answer with a 13-0 run over the next 4:34 of action to take their largest lead of the game at 57-46 with just over nine minutes remaining. The teams would go back-and-forth over the remainder of the game as the Comets would never be able to get the lead under double digits and the Raiders would go on to win 75-63.

With the win the Raiders clinched the no. 1 seed in next week's OAC Tournament and will receive a first-round bye before hosting one of the OAC Semifinals on Thursday, February 26 at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
