CANTON, Ohio—The Mount Union baseball team split a doubleheader with a convincing 11-3 victory over SUNY Brockport before falling 10-2 to Adrian College in the afternoon cap.
Game One: Mount Union 11, SUNY Brockport 3
In the opening contest of the day, the Purple Raiders' offense exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits to cruise past the Golden Eagles. After an early exchange of runs, Mount Union took command with a four-run third inning and never looked back.
Junior
Drew Denham paced the attack, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. He was joined in the home run column by senior
Luke Ickes, who finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Daniel remained a force at the plate, tallying three hits—including a double—and scoring twice.
On the mound, junior
Luke Ickes earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the season, pitching 5.2 solid innings while allowing just three runs on five hits and striking out five. Junior
Christopher Maurer tossed 3.1 hitless innings to shut the door on Brockport.
Game Two: Adrian 10, Mount Union 2
Adrian College (2-0) handed the Raiders (5-1) their first setback of the season.
The Bulldogs established an early lead and broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Senior
Chris Tsouras provided the lone offensive spark for Mount Union in the bottom of the fourth, blasting a two-run home run (his first of the season) that scored Tome and cut the lead to 7-2.
Adrian pitcher Edward Bieniasz struck out eight over seven innings. Junior
Anthony Warner (1-1) took the loss, surrendering five earned runs over 4.2 innings. Freshman
Evan Roberts pitched four innings of three-hit ball in relief for the Raiders.
Mount Union returns to action Friday, Feb. 27, as it travels to University Heights to take on John Carroll at 1 p.m.
