Women's Lacrosse: Raiders Drop Home Opener

ALLIANCE, Ohio-- The Mount Union Women's Lacrosse team was defeated in its home opener 10-9 by Kenyon College on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders (1-1) were led in the game by last week's OAC offensive player of the week, fifth-year Haylee Handrahan (Hilliard) who put in three goals and an assist as well as senior goalkeeper Abby Reagan (Columbus) who had a 47% save percentage and nine total saves playing all 60 minutes in goal.

Junior Mae Pawlikowski (Orchard Park, NY) also put in two goals on four shots on goal, Junior Emma Labbe (Uniontown) and Senior Ella Nejad (Rocky River) each had a goal and an assist, and Freshmen Olivia Bardeschewski (Fairport, NY) and Lizzie Dorley (Pittsburgh, PA) both had a goal.

Kenyon (1-0) was led by Charlotte Skelly and Elena Zuvekas, who each put in three goals.

Kenyon got out to a 3-0 lead after just five minutes of play, but Mount Union stayed in it, and the first quarter ended with an Emma Labbe goal to make it 4-1.

Kenyon took a 5-1 lead four minutes into the second quarter, then Mount Union put four straight into the net while the defense held Kenyon scoreless for ten straight minutes off great defensive plays and three saves by Abby Reagan in goal.

Kenyon finished the first half off with a goal with only 12 seconds remaining to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.

Kenyon got going again at the start of the second half, scoring three straight to take a 9-5 lead with 2:44 remaining in the third. The Raiders ended the third quarter with a goal from Mae Pawlikowski that was assisted by Ella Nejad to cut it to a 9-6 Kenyon lead.

The first eight minutes of the final quarter were scoreless, then a goal from Ella Nejad opened a three-goal run from the Raiders to tie it up at 9-9 with just three minutes left. Charlotte Skelly then put a goal in with 2:10 left to give Kenyon a lead that they would never relinquish. The game finished with Kenyon winning 10-9.

The Mount Union Women's Lacrosse team will be back in action on February 25th at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
