Box Score WESTERVILLE, Ohio— The No. 3-seed Mount Union women's basketball team fell 68-58 Thursday evening to the No. 2-seed Otterbein in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The Purple Raiders (18-9) were led by
Reese Triplett (New Philadelphia / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) with 14 points while
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) finished with 12 points.
Otterbein (21-5) was led by Mattie Walburn with 23 points.
Mount Union got the first two points of the game on free throws from Dunkle 2:15 into the game. Otterbein led 6-4 with 5:12 remaining in the quarter but Mount Union finished the quarter with a 7-2 run taking an 11-8 lead as three different Raiders scored in the run.
Otterbein jumped out to a 15-13 lead into the but a bucket from Triplett tied the game up at 15. Both teams traded buckets throughout the final three minutes with neither team getting a lead larger of four as Otterbein led 22-18 with 1:42. From that point Mount Union went on a 7-2 run once again with three different Raiders scoring with
Lily Scott (Youngstown / Ursuline) hitting a three to take a 25-24 lead into the halftime break.
Mount Union got going to start the third quarter with a bucket from Triplett and
Mckayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) leading 29-26. Both teams had runs of 6-0 as Mount Union kept its lead being 35-32 with 4:06 left. Otterbein finished the quarter with an 8-2 run, taking a 40-38 lead into the final quarter.
Both teams traded buckets through the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as Otterbein had a 49-42 lead. Mount Union went on a 5-0 run with a layup from Triplett and an and-one from Mason with 6:23 remaining getting Mount Union within one at 49-47. Otterbein went on a 6-0 run over a three-minute period, taking a 55-47 lead. Mount Union could not get any closer than six the rest of the way.
Mount Union graduates three seniors in Dunkle,
Audrey Livesay (Akron / Revere) and
Sierra Schlosser (Galloway / Bishop Ready) and will finish its season with an overall record of 18-9 and 9-7 in the OAC.
