Softball: Raiders Take a Pair to Wrap Spring Break Trip; Mercer Becomes Career RBIs Leader

BARTOW, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team won a pair of games to wrap up their Spring Break trip on Friday afternoon, beating Earlham 5-1 and beating Albertus Magnus 7-0.

The Purple Raiders (8-4) would strike first in their first game of the day when senior Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison) hit an RBI double that scored senior Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the second inning when sophomore Allison Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) hit an RBI single to bring in senior Lydia Brunner (Minerva) to stretch the lead to two runs.

Then, later in the same inning senior Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit a sacrifice fly RBI that scored senior Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary) and broke the school record for Career RBIs, recording the 134th RBI of her career.

Jones would then hit her second RBI of the game that brought in Denney in the bottom half of the fourth to make the lead 4-0 and then Cahill would hit a solo homerun to center field in the fifth inning to make the lead five runs.

The Quakers (5-6) would score a run in the bottom of the seventh inning off an RBI from Faith Butler, but that's all they would be able to get as the Raiders would go on to win 5-1.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four. Freshman Ari Simpson (Cardington / Cardington Local) would come in to pitch the final inning in relief and would give up one run on one hit.

The Raiders would strike first once again in their second game of the day, with a four-run third inning. Jones would get the scoring started with an RBI bunt single that scored Brunner, followed by a two-RBI single from freshman Addy Antonetz (Zanesville / West Muskingum) and then an RBI single from Cahill to take a 4-0 lead. Mount Union would then add two more runs in the top of the fifth inning off an RBI triple from Antonetz and an RBI single from Cahill before they would go on to add their seventh and final run of the game in the sixth inning when Brunner had an RBI sacrifice bunt to score senior Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) and make the lead 7-0.

The Falcons (3-7) wouldn't have an answer over the remainder of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 7-0.

Senior Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale) would get the start in the circle in game two for Mount Union and pitched five shutout innings, allowing just four hits. Sophomore Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) would come in to pitch the final two innings and allowed just two hits and struck out three.

The Raiders return home next when they host Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Capital in their home opener on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. back at the 23rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
