Softball: Raiders Run Win Streak to 10 in Sweep of Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, taking game one 9-1 and winning game two 11-0 in five innings.

The Purple Raiders (14-4, 4-0 OAC) would strike first in game one when freshman Addy Antonetz (Zanesville / West Muskingum) hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning that scored senior Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to take a 1-0 lead.

Mount Union would add to their lead in the top half of the third with a pair of runs, the first coming from an RBI single from Mercer that scored sophomore Allison Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) and then Mercer scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to three runs. The Raiders would go on to add three more in the fifth inning when Mercer scored off an RBI single from senior Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison), then senior Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) scored on an RBI double from freshman Alli Hodgkinson (Akron / Manchester). The final run of the inning would come off an RBI single from freshman Grace Bates (Mount Vernon) that brought in Hodgkinson to extend the lead to 6-0.

Then, in the top half of the seventh Mount Union would add three more runs scoring on RBIs from Hodgkinson and senior Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary) to make the lead nine runs.

The Cardinals (7-9, 1-3 OAC) would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on an RBI from Maggie McVicker but that's all they would be able to get as the Raiders would go on to win 9-1.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched six scoreless innings, giving up just a single hit and striking out seven. Sophomore Daniella Vecchio (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) would come in to throw the final inning in relief and gave up one run on two hits.

The Raiders would once again strike first in game two when Mercer scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and then Antonetz hit a solo home run to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Union would then add to their lead with a six run second inning, the first came off a Reicosky RBI and then Mercer and Jones scored after an error by the Otterbein shortstop and then Cahill hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to eight runs. The Raiders would then add two more runs in the fourth, scoring off RBIs from Antonetz and Bates and then added another in the fifth inning off an RBI double from Mercer to make the lead 11-0.

Otterbein wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the fifth as the Raiders would go on to win game two 11-0 in five innings.

Sophomore Emma Reemsnyder (Canton / GlenOak) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game two and threw a complete game, allowing just two hits and striking out three in the shutout win.

The Raiders return home next when they host Wilmington in an OAC matchup on Friday, April 3 in a doubleheader with games beginning at 1 and 3 p.m. in Alliance.
