Baseball: No. 15 Mount Union Rallies to Top Thiel, 14-8

GREENVILLE, Pa. — The No. 15 Mount Union baseball team (19-4) came back to defeat Thiel 14-8 on Monday.

Trailing 7-4 entering the seventh inning, the Purple Raiders exploded for 10 runs over the final three frames to secure the comeback victory.

The rally began in the seventh as senior Aidan Schroeder (Pittsburgh, PA / Keystone Oaks) doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Luke Ickes (Green, OH / Green). Senior Chris Tsouras (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor) then tied the game with a two-RBI double before junior Drew Denham (Alliance, OH / Marlington) drove in the go-ahead run with a single to shortstop.

Mount Union extended the lead in the eighth, scoring four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from junior Trevor Szekely (Canal Fulton, OH/NW). Sophomore Daniel Tome III (Cleveland, OH / St. Edwards) sealed the win in the ninth with a two-run home run to right field - his second-straight game with a home run.

Ickes led the hitting showcase with three hits, one of eight Raiders with multi-hit performances.

Freshman Evan Roberts (Newark, OH / Licking Valley) (1-0) earned the win in relief, the first of his career, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing just one run while striking out four. Freshman Cole Jung (Westlake, OH / Westlake) started the contest, striking out five over 3.0 innings.

The Purple Raiders' pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and outhit the Tomcats 18-11. The Tomcats dropped to 5-15.

Mount Union returns to action on Friday, April 3, with a conference doubleheader at Wilmington with game one starting at 1 p.m.
