Women's Lacrosse: Defense Powers Raiders Past Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pennsylvania—The Mount Union women's lacrosse team picked up an 11-5 nonconference victory over Westminster (Pa.) Tuesday evening.
 
The Purple Raiders (5-4, 1-0 OAC) were led by the duo of Ella Nejad (Rocky River) and Mae Pawlikowski (Orchard Park, N.Y.) with three goals each.
 
Haylee Handrahan (Hilliard / Hilliard Darby) and Lizzie Dorley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton LaSalle) finished the day with two goals while Olivia Bardeschewski (Fairport, N.Y.) finished the game with one goal.
 
Kaitlyn Kucainski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) played all 60 minutes in goal making seven saves and allowing just five goals. Dorley finished the day with five draw controls and three caused turnovers leading Mount Union.
 
Westminster (5-5, 2-1 PAC) was led by Felicia Young with two goals while Falyn Snyder made 11 saves in goal.
 
Dorley got Mount Union on the board first just 44 seconds into the game. Westminster answered with a goal four minutes but 31 seconds later Nejad put Mount Union back in the lead with a goal. A goal from Pawlikowski and Handrahan ended the quarter as Mount Union led 4-1.
 
Westminster began the second quarter with two goals to close within one but a goal from Pawlikowski pushed the lead back to two. Westminster got one more goal before the end of the quarter as Mount Union had a 5-4 lead.
 
Nejad scored the first two goals of the third quarter within the first 1:30 of game play taking a 7-4 lead. Westminster got a goal, but Mount Union responded with two more as Handrahan and Pawlikowski each scored a goal for Mount Union taking a 9-5 lead into the final quarter.
 
Over the last quarter Mount Union shut out Westminster and scored a goal from Bardeschewski and Dorley to finish out the game.
 
Mount Union will now return home taking on Rhodes in a non-conference matchup on Friday, April 3rd at 12 PM.
