COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Mount Union softball team (3-3) played two games on Sunday morning, losing both in close matches, each ending with a score of 5-4. In the first game, they faced Gettysburg College (2-4), where senior starting pitcher Kendyll Cahill delivered a strong performance, pitching 4.2 innings and limiting the Bullets to just six hits and two runs.
Gettysburg scored all its runs in the fifth inning, which included two sacrifice bunts and three singles, capped off by an RBI single from Abby Todd. The Purple Raiders rallied in the sixth inning, starting with a two-RBI single down the left field line by senior third baseman Emily Denney. Sophomore shortstop Alli Goodwill continued the momentum with an RBI single to right field. Finally, sophomore first baseman Stephanie Esswein walked with the bases loaded, bringing in the fourth run of the inning.
Mount Union's comeback attempt fell short as Gettysburg closed out the game with Lexi Waring pitching 1.1 innings and allowing no runs, securing a 5-4 victory for the Bullets.
In game two, the Purple Raiders faced the College of Saint Benedict (6-4) in a closely contested matchup. Saint Benedict opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, capped off by Olivia Laudenbach stealing home. Mount Union responded in the third inning when freshman center fielder Addy Antonetz hit a two-RBI double to center field. Antonetz had an impressive performance, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
In the fourth inning, Saint Benedict added a run when Elizabeth Gross scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, the Purple Raiders responded with a solo home run to left-center field. Saint Benedict answered in the bottom of the fifth, as Olivia Tautges scored on another wild pitch. Mount Union scored the final run of the game when Antonetz hit another solo home run, this time to deep left field. However, the Purple Raiders' comeback fell short, resulting in a 5-4 loss.
Mount Union will return to action on Tuesday, as the team heads to Florida to play two games: one against Utica and the other against Lake Forest.
