ALLIANCE, Ohio - The No. 10 nationally ranked Mount Union baseball team (24-6) defeated No. 18 nationally ranked Washington & Jefferson (20-6) in a ranked non-conference matchup, 17-5.
Starting right-handed pitcher
Ty Dennison (Hudson, OH / Hudson) pitched 4.0 innings of work, pitched 4.0 innings of work, striking out four batters, allowing four hits and four runs. Right-handed pitcher
Christopher Maurer (Hudson, OH / Hudson) came in relief and delivered a strong 3.0 innings of work with four strikeouts, allowing just two hits and no runs.
In the first inning, the Presidents struck quickly, scoring three runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from catcher Luke Alvarez.
The Purple Raiders made a strong comeback in the second inning when junior designated hitter
Trevor Szekely (Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) hit a three-run home run to deep right-center field. Szekely had an outstanding day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits, which included two home runs and seven RBIs. It was a career-best performance for him.
Sophomore shortstop
Daniel Tome III (Cleveland, OH / St. Edwards) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Purple Raiders a 7-2 lead after two innings. In the bottom of the third, Szekely continued his strong performance with an RBI double to center field. Senior second baseman
Aidan Schroeder (Pittsburgh, PA / Keystone Oaks) followed with an RBI single, marking his second RBI of the game as Mount Union kept the momentum going.
In the fourth inning, Szekely added another RBI single, and freshman first baseman
Luke Perkins (Olmstead Falls, OH / Olmstead Falls) knocked a two-RBI double to left field. In the sixth inning, Szekely hit his second home run of the day, a solo shot to deep center field. By the seventh inning, he had also secured his second double of the game, this time to left center field, contributing yet another RBI and bringing the Purple Raiders' total to 17 runs.
Freshman right-handed pitcher
Cole Jung (Westlake, OH / Westlake) finished the game for the Purple Raiders, pitching 2.0 innings of work, securing the 17-5 victory.
Mount Union will host Heidelberg for a doubleheader in OAC play on Saturday.
