ALLIANCE, Ohio - The No. 10 nationally ranked Mount Union baseball team (26-6) swept Heidelberg (13-18) in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, as the Purple Raiders improved to 10-2 in OAC play.
In game one, starting pitcher
Ty Dennison (Hudson, OH / Hudson) dominated, pitching 7.0 innings, tallying eight strikeouts, allowing only seven hits and two runs, and earning his sixth win of the season.
In the third inning, the Student Princes struck first, scoring two runs off of two RBI singles, including one to left center from Logan Winstead. But the Purple Raiders responded, finally breaking through in the fifth inning.
Sophomore shortstop
Daniel Tome III (Cleveland, OH / St. Edwards) delivered an RBI single, finishing game one with a 3-for-5 performance that included two RBIs. Following him, junior outfielder
Chris Tsouras (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor) also contributed with an RBI single to second base. Junior designated hitter
Trevor Szekely (Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) then hit a two-RBI double to deep left-center field. Szekely had an impressive game, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs.
Freshman first baseman
Luke Perkins (Olmstead Falls, OH / Olmstead Falls) hit a sacrifice fly to give Mount Union the 5-2 lead to end the fifth inning. In the sixth, the Purple Raiders kept it pouring as junior third baseman
Drew Denham (Alliance, OH / Marlington) doubled deep to left field, and Szekely contributed with a two-RBI single to center field, as Mount Union led 8-2 at the end of six.
In the seventh and eighth innings, Tome III hit an RBI double, Perkins recorded a sacrifice fly, and Szekely stole home, extending Mount Union's lead to 11-2. Junior right-handed pitcher
Christopher Maurer (Hudson, OH / Hudson) closed out the game, pitching 2.0 innings with one strikeout while not allowing any hits or runs, securing the game one 11-1 victory.
In game two, junior left-handed pitcher
Luke Ickes (Green, OH / Green) had a career day on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts, allowing just three hits and two runs, with only one being earned.
Heidelberg started the game strong with an RBI single from Grant Bomer, but following that, Ickes shut the Student Princes down. In the bottom of the second, Szekely hit an RBI single to tie the game, and
Aidan Schroeder (Pittsburgh, PA / Keystone Oaks) followed with an RBI single to left field to give Mount Union the 2-1 lead. Schroeder had a three-hit game, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Schroeder hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior outfielder
Brycen Fox (Hamilton, OH / Badin) contributed with another RBI single, extending the Purple Raiders' lead. Tome III then added to the score with a two-RBI double down the left field line, followed by Tsouras, who also hit an RBI single. Finally, Denham delivered a moonshot to deep center field, hitting a two-run home run—his sixth homer of the season. The Purple Raiders continued to build their lead and were ahead 10-1 at the end of the fourth inning.
Freshman catcher
Jake Jung (Westlake, OH / Westlake) and Fox each added an RBI single in the sixth inning, contributing to a total of 14 runs for the Purple Raiders. Junior right-handed pitcher
Drew Gernert (Mequon, WI / Homestead) finished the game, pitching 2.0 innings with three strikeouts, securing the 14-3 win.
Mount Union will hit the road Wednesday for an OAC doubleheader against Marietta, with game one set for 4:00 PM.
