Softball: No. 17 Raiders Get Senior Day Sweep Over Wooster

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The no. 17 nationally ranked Mount Union softball team swept Wooster in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 5-2 and winning game two 2-0.

It was senior day for the Purple Raiders, as they celebrated seven seniors: Lydia Brunner (Minerva), Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison), Kaitlyn Culver (Girard), Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary), Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch), Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover), and Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale).

In game one, the Purple Raiders (23-5) defeated the Fighting Scots (14-14) with a score of 5-2, as Cahill dominated by pitching 7.0 innings, recording one strikeout, while allowing just five hits and two runs.

Mount Union started the scoring early, as freshman Addy Antonetz (Zanesville / West Muskingum) delivered an RBI single to right field. Wooster responded in the top of the third inning, adding two runs, as Cate Barkdoll hit a two-run single up the middle.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, freshman Allison Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) responded for the Purple Raiders by hitting an RBI single up the middle. Jones had a strong performance, going 3-for-3 with one RBI and also scoring a run. Reicosky hit a two-run double to add two more insurance runs for Mount Union. In the bottom of the fifth, Culver hit a sacrifice bunt to score freshman Ava Beas (Brunswick), to secure the 5-2 victory.

In game two, it was a pitching duel, as sophomore Emma Reemsnyder (Canton / GlenOak) made the start for the Purple Raiders on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings, tallying five strikeouts, allowing only three hits, and no runs.

For the Fighting Scots, Jillian Meszaros made the start, pitching 6.0 innings, recording one strikeout, and allowing only four hits and two runs.

In the first inning, Antonetz picked up where she left off for Mount Union, hitting an RBI single. She would score later in the inning on a wild pitch, and those two runs were enough to secure the 2-0 victory for the Purple Raiders.

Mount Union's next game will be against Marietta for a doubleheader at home on Wednesday at 1:00 PM in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.
