SALEM, Va. – The no. 12 nationally ranked Mount Union softball team lost in the opening round of the College World Series to no. 9 Simpson 4-3.
The Storm (40-6) struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Mackenzie James drew an RBI walk to break the scoreless tie and take a 1-0 lead.
The Purple Raiders (35-8) would respond in the top half of the sixth inning when senior
Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison) hit a three-run home run to left field to take a 3-1 lead.
Simpson would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the same inning with three runs of their own, with RBIs coming from Katie Shaner, Brielyn Ginnaty and Caelynn Obleton to take a 4-3 lead.
Mount Union wouldn't be able to answer in the bottom of the seventh as the Storm would go on to win 4-3.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out four.
The Raiders will now take on no. 8 Belhaven tomorrow in an elimination game at 6:30 p.m. in at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.
