ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's volleyball team swept Hiram 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 running its win streak up to nine straight Tuesday evening at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Mount Union (11-2) was led by
Riley Meister (Madison) and
Zoe Sweigart (Canal Winchester) with 12 and nine kills.
DeLani Durst (Clyde) and
Anna Mihacevich led for assists, both with 16.
Averi Haley (Orrville) had 16 digs and while
Ava Bolen (Wellsburg, W. Va. / Brooke) finished with six blocks.
Hiram (6-6) was led by Megan Chiang with 10 kills, Courtney Johnson with 15 assists and Jacey English with 11 digs.
In the first set, Hiram scored first and Mount Union shortly responded by taking the lead. Hiram fought back by tying it at 12 points after going on a four-point run. Hiram then took the lead, with Mount Union battling to keep the score close for the entirety of the set. Sweigart led the Raiders in kills in the set. The Raiders were able to grab a two-point lead at the end of the set, and they were able to take the win for set one.
The second set was another set of battling. Hiram was able to go on a three-point run and lead 6-3 before Mount Union then bounced back and did the same to tie it at six points. After this, leads taken went back and forth between the Raiders and the Terriers. Mount Union finally took a 3-point lead at 18-15, where they were able to keep their lead and win set two.
Hiram started with scoring first again in the third set. This set looked much like the first two, with the Raiders and Terriers fighting for the win. The Purple Raiders had two kills in a row from Bolen and Meister for their 18
th and 19
th points. The score would continue to go back and forth until Mount Union was able to take the lead at the end, winning set three 25-23.
Mount Union will now head to Washington D.C. for the Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet this Friday and Saturday taking on Eastern, Arcadia and the hosts.
