Mount Union (12-16, 5-7 OAC) swept a doubleheader with
conference foe Capital (13-15, 6-6 OAC) on Saturday, April 21 at
23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio. The Raiders won the opener 7-1
then rallied to erase a five run deficit to win game two 6-5 in
comeback fashion.
In the opener, shortstop Josh Faltot led off with a solo homer
to left to put the Raiders ahead 1-0. Capital tied things up
briefly in the second before Mount Union scored a pair in the
fourth following a homerun by leftfielder Andy Warner and a SAC fly
by third baseman Nate McFarland. The Purple Raiders then added
three more insurance runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Warner finished the contest 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen
base, Faltot was 2-for-3, and centerfielder Jason Evans was 2-for-3
with two RBI.
Shawn Kerek (6-2) went the distance for the sixth time this
season, allowed three hits and struck out 10.
In game two, the Crusaders scored single runs in the first,
second, and fourth to go along with a two-run third inning,
building a 5-0 advantage. Mount Union chipped into the lead in the
fifth after McFarland hit a two-run single, making the score
5-2.
The Raiders then rallied in the sixth, scoring four times to
make the score 6-5, advantage Purple and White. Cory Slaybaugh
highlighted the inning with a pinch hit two-run double off the
centerfield wall that tied things up at five a piece. He then
scored after a Capital error to give the Raiders the edge. Mike
Reynolds closed the door in the seventh to pick up his first save
of the year.
Tommy Kerr (2-1) started and went the first 6.1 innings,
allowing three earned runs en route to picking up the win.
Overall at the plate, Warner was 2-for-3 while McFarland was
2-for-4.
The Raiders get right back into action tomorrow at Muskingum.
