Mount Union (8-13, 2-4 OAC) split a conference doubleheader at
Ohio Northern (8-10, 2-2 OAC) on Monday, April 9. The Raiders took
the opener 1-0 in eight innings then fell 4-3 in game two.
In game one, the Raiders broke a scoreless tie in the top of the
eighth inning when leftfielder Andy Warner drove home pinch runner
Jonathan Houston.
It was a typical day at the office for Raider starter Shawn
Kerek (5-1/1.91 ERA), who went all eight innings in tossing the
shutout. He allowed six hits and two walks while striking out nine.
On the season, Kerek has five complete games in six starts.
Ohio Northern's Brian Hill (1-4) also went the distance and
fanned eight.
Offensively, Warner finished the day 3-for-4 with a stolen base,
rightfielder Jon Suntala was 2-for-3, and shortstop Justin Marx was
2-for-4.
In the nightcap, the Raiders rallied for three runs in the top
of the seventh inning to erase a 2-0 defecit. Third baseman Nate
McFarland and catcher Jon Schulz accounted for the runs with RBI
singles. However, Ohio Northern came back with two in their half of
the inning to earn a 4-3 walkoff win.
Mike Reynolds (1-5) was dealt the loss for Mount Union despite
allowing only one earned run over 6.2 innings of work with seven
strikeouts. Drew Wieland (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the
Polar Bears.
Offensively, first baseman Thomas Pfaus was 2-for-3 with a
double for the Raiders.
The Purple Raiders return to action on Wednesday, April 11
versus Baldwin-Wallace. First pitch from Alliance, Ohio is set for
1 p.m.
