Mount Union College's baseball team (3-1) split a doubleheader
with Rhode Island College on Monday, March 10 in Florida. The
Purple Raiders fell 17-5 in the opener before winning game two
6-1.
In game one, Rhode Island took command early taking advantage of
some Raider defensive misques. Mount Union was led by backstop
Connor Nell who was 2-2 with a double and two RBI. Shortstop Craig
Nott was 1-1 with a run scored and an RBI and Ryan Schmidt added a
single and an RBI. Pitcher Erik Miller suffered the loss.
The Raiders scored five runs on seven hits with four errors,
while Rhode Island score 17 times on 18 hits with two errors.
In the second game, Mount Union received a great pitching
performance from Joe Irwin in shutting down Rhode Island en rout to
the 6-1 win. Irwin pitched a one-hitter in earning his first win of
the season. He struck out four in the process.
Offensively, second baseman Michael Almasy went 2-4 with two RBI
and a run scored. Third baseman Nate McFarland was 1-2 with a
double, two RBI, two walks and a run scored. Craig Nott and Jon
Schulz each added a hit for Mount Union
The Raiders scored six runs on five hits and no errors, while
Rhode Island scored its only run on a homer by Rob Reyes in the
third inning.
