Mount Union College (16-9, 7-3 OAC) was defeated by Heidelberg
(22-5, 8-2 OAC) on Monday, April 14 in Tiffin, Ohio. The Student
Princes took game one 5-4 (11 innings) and won the second game
9-4.
In game one, the Raiders would get an early start scoring four
runs in the top of the first. Freshman/shortstop Craig Knott was
awarded first base after being hit. Senior/catcher Jon Schulz
singled to right field allowing Knott to advance to second.
Sophomore/first baseman Cory Slaybaugh then singled to right field,
scoring Knott. Junior/third baseman Nate McFarland walked.
Freshman/designated hitter Dan Henderson would double, scoring
Schulz, Slaybaugh, and McFarland to end the top of the first
4-0.
Heidelberg would respond in the bottom of the third inning to
make the score 4-1. The Student Princes would then even the contest
4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, forcing the game to go into extra
innings. Then in the bottom of the 11th inning Heidelberg's Andrew
Buelow doubled down the right field line, scoring the winning
run.
Individually, the Raiders were led by Henderson who was 3-5 with
three RBI and Slaybaugh who finished 2-5 with an RBI. On the mound,
starter Paul Mariotti went 6.2 innings of work with six strikeouts
while Erik Miller took the loss in relief.
In game two, Heidelberg jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never
looked back winning 9-4. Mount Union did rally for three runs in
the top of the six highlighted by third baseman Nate McFarland's
two RBI single.
Offensively the Raiders were led by freshman/outfielder Greg
Ferrell who went 2-4, and McFarland who was 1-3. Starting Pitcher
Brett Thomas (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year.
As a team, Mount Union was held to just four hits on the day,
while Heidelberg scored nine runs on 14 hits.
