Mount Union College's baseball team (19-14, 10-6 OAC) took two
from John Carroll to reclaim the fourth spot in the Ohio Athletic
Conference on Saturday, April 16. The Raiders won the opener
6-3 and the second 13-10.
In the opener, Mount Union touched JCU starter Tony Evanko for
three runs in the first inning. Senior leftfielder Andy
Warner doubled in two runs and shortstop Craig Knott added an RBI
sacrifice.
John Carroll scored twice in the third and once in the sixth but
the Raiders added runs in the fourth and two more in the
seventh.
Individually, center fielder Greg Ferrell was 2-4 with two runs,
catcher Jon Schulz was 2-3 with one RBI and second baseman Michael
Almasy was 2-3.
On the mound, starter Paul Mariotti went 6.1 strong innings for
his sixth win of the year. Mariotti allowed three runs on six
hits and struck out four. Brad Griffith came on in relief and
struck out two.
In the night cap, the Purple and White grabbed seven runs in the
first two innings. Craig Knott jacked a three-run homer and
third baseman Nate McFarland singled in a couple runs to highlight
the quick start.
Mount Union added one run in the fourth, three runs in the fifth
and two more in the eighth. John Carroll did battle back
scoring two runs in the first, fifth, eighth and ninth innings but
fell short 13-10.
Individually, the Raiders were led by Greg Ferrell who was 3-5
including a homerun with three RBI and four runs scored.
Knott added two hits and four RBI, McFarland was 2-4 with two RBI,
catcher Connor Nell added two hits and first baseman Cory Slaybaugh
had a pair of hits for Mount Union.
Starter Brett Thomas went four innings while Joe Irwin came on
in relief for his fifth win of the season.
Mount Union will take on Notre Dame (OH) on Monday, April 28
beginning at 1 p.m. from 23rd Street Field.
