Mount Union College's baseball team (13-6, 6-0 OAC) swept
a doubleheader with OAC foe Capital (5-14, 0-6 OAC) on Saturday,
April 5 at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton. The Raiders won the
first game 4-2 and the second game 8-3.
In the opener, Mount Union struck early on a freshman/shortstop
Craig Knott solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning. In the
fourth, senior/catcher Jon Schulz singled in senior/designated
hitter Andy Warner to extend the lead to 2-0.
Capital answered the call in the top half of the sixth inning
scoring two runs on one hit to even the score at 2-2. In the bottom
half of the inning, junior/first baseman Cory Slaybaugh smacked a
two-run homer to give Mount Union the lead again.
Raider sophomore/pitcher Paul Mariotti sealed the deal in the
seventh for his fourth win of the season. Mariotti went the
distance for his team-best fourth complete game on the season. He
is now a perfect 4-0 on the year.
In game two, Warner doubled home junior/outfielder Grant Sevek
in the bottom of the first to open the scoring for Mount Union. The
Purple and White added four more runs in the third, highlighted by
a Knott triple, extending the lead 5-0.
Capital got on the board in the top half of the fourth on a Mike
St. John sacrifice fly. Mount Union answered with a RBI single from
Warner to make the score 6-1. Capital would add another run in the
fifth and the seventh, while Mount Union tallied two in the bottom
of the sixth and held on for the win.
Junior/starter Brett Thomas picked up his fourth win of the
season, striking out five with two walks in 6.2 innings of work.
Sophomore/pitcher Joe Irwin came on in relief.
Mount Union next plays Case Western April 6 in Cleveland, Ohio.
