Mount Union College's baseball team (15-6) defeated Case Western
University (4-15-1) in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 6 in
Cleveland, Ohio. The Raiders would take the first game 19-3 and win
the second 5-4.
In game one, the Raiders jumped on the board first with a double
by junior/infielder Nate McFarland. Grant Sevek would hit a 2 RBI
single to make the score 2-0. Freshman/infielder Craig Knott would
double and freshman/infielder Greg Ferrell would single, scoring
Knott.
In the top of the fourth, all nine batters would score for Mount
Union. Highlighting that inning, was a grand slam by Sevek to make
the score 7-0. Mount Union would score four more runs to end the
inning with the score of 14-0.
Case Western would score two runs in the bottom of the third and
fourth innings.
Offensively, the Raiders were led by Craig Knott who was 2-3,
Andy Warner who went 2-3, Jon Schulz who was 2-5, and Nate
McFarland who went 3-3. Sevek finished 2-6 with six RBI.
Eric Miller was the winning pitcher. He allowed three earned
runs, one strikeout and one walk.
In the second game, Mount Union would score two in the top of
the second inning with a two RBI single from senior/infielder Greg
Boyd. Case responded with one run in the bottom of the second,
tieing the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Case
Western would rally, scoring two more runs to make the score 3-3.
The Purple and White would score late in the fifth and sixth
innings to finalize the score 5-4.
Individually for Mount Union, Sevek again had two hits, Warner
was 2-3 and Greg Ferrell was 1-3 with two RBI.
On the mound, starter Cody Colly went 3.2 innings with two
strikeouts while Steve Hustack come on in relief to earn the win
for Mount Union.
The Raiders next travel to Ohio Athletic Conference rival
Marietta on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch at 4:00 p.m.
