(PITTSBURGH, Pa.)--Mount Union College's volleyball team split a
pair of matches Friday beating R.I.T. (N.Y.) 3-0 (25-23, 25-20,
25-19), falling to Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) 3-1 (39-37, 26-24, 19-25,
25-22) then Saturday defeating Johns Hopkins (Md.) 3-2 (25-21,
25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 15-12) and Allegheny 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15)
at the Carnegie Mellon Crossover in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Mount Union (14-3 overall) got 13 kills from Melissa Mahnke
(North Royalton/North Royalton) and 33 digs and three service aces
from Sarah Dean (Strongsville/Walsh Jesuit) in the win over Johns
Hopkins.
Early in the first set against Carnegie Mellon, sophomore Monica
Hupertz (Willoughby Hills/Beaumont) suffered an elbow injury during
the match then after a 45-minute delay, the marathon match ended
with Carnegie Mellon taking a 39-37 win. The Purple Raiders rallied
to win the second set 26-24 but lost the final two sets for the 3-1
decision. Mahnke had 18 kills, Dean had 31 digs, while sophomore
Katie Kmieck (Lakewood/Lakewood) contributed 49 assists.
Against R.I.T., Mahnke led Mount Union with nine kills and
sophomore Elyse Perry (Springfield/Springfield Shawnee) had a
season-high six block assists.
The Purple Raiders next travel to Wittenberg to face the College
of Wooster and Wittenberg on Saturday 27. Game one time expected at
1:00 p.m.
