Mount Union (11-0) has the nation's longest win streak at
26 games and will host Montclair State (NJ) in a second round game
next Saturday at noon in the second round.
Quarterback Kurt Rocco (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) was
an efficient 14-of-19 for 251 yards and two touchdowns as he
engineered a Mount Union offense that outgained W&J,
581-127.
Cecil Shorts III (Cleveland/Collinwood) was the top target as he
caught seven passes for 160 yards and two scores, while the
Raiders had a pair of 100 yard rushers as Terrance Morring (Sanford, FL/Winter Springs) had 18 carries for 123 yards
and two touchdowns while Scott Panchik (Natrona Hts,
PA/Highlands) had 15 carries for 102 yards and three scores.
The Mount Union defense was equally efficient as in
the first half they held the Presidents to 18 total yards.
For the game, W&J was held to minus-six
yards rushing and 127 total yards. Defensive ends James
Herbert (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) and Joe Millings (Copley/Copley)
each had two of the Raiders five sacks.
Washington & Jefferson (9-2) went three-and-out and lost
five yards on its first drive and took only two plays for
Mount Union to get on the board as Rocco tossed a 25-yard
touchdown pass to Shorts.
Mount Union would score three more touchdowns in the quarter on
just 13 plays as Panchik and Morring had four and 16 yard runs then
Rocco and Shorts hooked up again from 55 yards out to give the
Raiders a commanding 27-0 lead.
Morring and Panchik each tallied rushing touchdowns in the
second quarter as the Raiders extended the lead to 41-0 at the
break.
Panchik would score one more time late in the third
quarter and backup running back Zac Lemmon
(Granville/Granville) finished the scoring with a four-yard run in
the fourth quarter.
