#1 Football Falls to Whitewater, 38-28 in 2009 Stagg Bowl

The Warhawks win their second national championship and have their first undefeated season in team history.

Mount Union ends its season at 14-1 sees its win streak end at 29 games and over its last 68 games is 66-2 with losses to Whitewater in 2007 and 2009 Stagg Bowls.

While Coppage handled things on the ground, Whitewater quarterback Jeff Donovan took care of things through the air and the offense as a whole as he finished 26-of-40 for 323 yards and a pair of touchdowns passes.

Donovan was particularly efficient in the first half as he led Whitewater to scores on each of their four possessions as the Warhawks went 9-for-9 on third down and chewed up nearly 19 minutes of possession to build a 28-14 halftime lead.

It marked the first time since the 2007 Stagg Bowl that Mount Union trailed by at least 14 points in a game.

Defending national champion Mount Union did not go quietly as they rallied in the second half to tie the game as quarterback Kurt Rocco (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) threw his third touchdown pass of the game, a 23-yarder to Cecil Shorts (Cleveland/Collinwood) to bring the score to 28-21.

The Raider defense then picked off Donovan as Alex Ferrara (Independence/Walsh Jesuit) set-up a short field and five plays later Rocco ran in from five yards out early in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

Mount Union did have opportunities to retake the lead but a pair of fourth quarter fumbles along with Coppage's touchdown and a Jeff Schebler 44-yard field goal made for the 38-28 final.

Rocco finished 23-of-39 for 383 yards with three scores two to Shorts, who had 10 catches for 185 yards and two scores receiving while Terrance Morring (Sanford, FL/Winter Springs) had 88 yards rushing on 20 carries as the Raiders out-gained Whitewater, 471-467 for the game and 289-156 in the second half.
