The loss in the second game stopped a four-game Mount Union win
streak, but the split leaves the Raiders at 3-1 in the OAC and 12-3
overall, while Ohio Northern stands at 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the
conference.
Mount Union jumped ahead early in the opener scoring three runs
in both the first and second innings to take a 6-0 lead.
Junior hurler Paul Mariotti (Copley/Copley) did the rest as he
allowed only two hits and struck out 10 to get the complete game
victory and move to 2-1 on the season.
Brian Hill had four strikeouts and went the distance in a
losing effort for Ohio Northern.
Sophomore center fielder Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) had a
pair of hits and drove in two runs, senior right fielder Grant
Sevek (Salem/Salem) also had two hits, scored twice and an RBI,
while sophomore designated hitter Dan Henderson (North
Canton/GlenOak) went 3-for-3 to pace the Raiders in the opener.
Ohio Northern turned the tables in the second game as the Polar
Bears scored three runs in the first inning and held a 8-1 lead
heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Henderson drove in a run on a ground out in the bottom of the
seventh and Sevek would hit a solo shot in the eighth inning to
close the gap to 8-3 going to the ninth.
Ohio Northern tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth
that proved to be valuable as Sevek would hit his second home run
of the game a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, but
the rally would there as the Polar Bears got the 11-7 victory.
Junior Joe Irwin (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) struck out six but
was touched up for six earned runs on 12 hits to take his
first loss of the season (3-1).
Justin Miller kept the OAC's top offense in check as he allowed
only eight his over 8.2 innings to pick up the win for
Ohio Northern.
Mount Union is back in action Sunday on the road at 1 p.m.
at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
