The teams along with Marietta College entered the day tied at
the top of the OAC standings.
After the sweep, Mount Union is now 16-8 overall and 6-4 in the
OAC, while Heidelberg moves to 23-5 overall and stays tied with
Marietta, who swept Wilmington, at 8-2 on top of the
conference.
The first game turned into a pitchers dual as David Paddock struck
out eight and fired a complete game four-hit shut out to lead
Heidelberg to the 3-0 victory.
Mount Union junior hurler Joe Irwin (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney)
also had a strong showing as he allowed seven hits and struck out
four but was done in by the first inning as the first two
Heidelberg batters singled and scored on a Biagio Boytim RBI single
and a wild pitch to give the Berg a 2-0 lead.
Heidelberg plated another run in the seventh on a Gar Keen RBI
single for the 3-0 final.
The Berg jumped out early again in game two as Jason Lash drove
in a run on a triple and a Keen ground out scored another to make
the score 2-0 in the first.
Lash then came up again in the second inning with a two-RBI
single that capped a four-run second inning and gave Heidelberg a
commanding 6-0 lead.
Mount Union missed opportunites early as they stranded six base
runners in the first three innings but had to settle with only two
runs in the third on an RBI double from Nate McFarland
(Canton/GlenOak) and an RBI single from Bobby Huth
(Massillon/Washington).
Heidelberg tacked on another run in the seventh and Everett
Thomas scattered five hits over the first six innings to pick up
the win.
Erik Miller (Fairport, NY/Fairport) took the loss for
Raiders.
Mount Union plays a pair of OAC road series next week Tuesday at
1 pm at Baldwin-Wallace College and Saturday at 1 pm at Muskingum
Colllege. The B-W series will be broadcast LIVE and a LIVE
