Baseball Gets a Split at Muskingum

Mount Union is now 18-10 overall and are 8-6 in the OAC, while Muskingum is 16-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

Muskingum had a 2-0 lead, but committed an error with two outs in the top of the sixth that came back to cost them as sophomore Craig Knott (Canton/GlenOak) came up an hit a three-run home run to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead.

Junior Joe Irwin (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) did all the rest as he scattered 10 hits and struck out four over seven innings to pick up the complete game victory.

In game two, the Muskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first.

Mount Union would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run home run from senior Cory Slaybaugh (Hartville/Lake), but Muskingum would come back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 4-2.

Sophomore Matt Tracy (Pittsburgh, PA/Central Catholic), who went 2-for-3, drove in a run in the fifth on a single to bring the Raiders to within a run, 4-3.

Muskingum put another run on the board in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-3 and Mount Union would again get within a run as Knott drove in a run on a ground out in the eighth.

The Raiders would get the tying run to second base in the ninth, but  Muskingum would slam the door for the win.

Sophomore Cory Wise (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas) went seven innings and took the loss for the Raiders.

Mount Union now plays its final 10 regular season games at home starting Sunday hosting Case Western Reserve University in a doubleheader Sunday at 1 pm at 23rd Street Field.
