Quick Start Lets Baseball Salvage Split with Washington & Jefferson

Mount Union (13-4) sent 11 batters to plate and took advantage of three errors to plate six runs in the first inning of game two to take a commanding lead.

The Raiders put the game away with three runs in the second on RBI doubles from senior Cory Slaybaugh (Hartville/Lake) and junior Alan Krontz (Brimfield/Field) and a sacrifice fly from freshman Kyle Von Duyke (Medina/Medina).

This was all more than enough offense for junior pitcher Mark Sabatino (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) who allowed only four hits and surrendered a single run in the top of the seventh as he got the complete game victory.

In the first game, Washington & Jefferson (11-5) scored a run in the top of the seventh as Andy Trettel drove in what turned out to be the game winner.

Slaybaugh drove in a pair of runs on a double in the first inning to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

The Presidents took the lead on bases clearing double from Marc Lubline in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Greg Ferrel (Uniontown/Green), who finished the game 3-for-4, drove in a run in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game.

Junior Erik Miller (Fairport, NY/Fairport) went 6.1 innings in the loss for the Raiders.

Mount Union returns to Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Capital University in Columbus.  The games will be broadcast LIVE online and a LIVE Stats game tracker will be right here.
