(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union opened the home portion of the 2010
baseball schedule with a pair of comeback wins against Westminster
(PA), 4-3 and 11-9, Saturday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
The Purple Raiders have now won three straight games and move to
7-2 overall, while Westminster falls to 3-8.
Senior hurler Mark Sabatino (Mayfield Hts./Mayfield) scattered six
hits over seven innings to get the win in a 4-2 Mount Union win in
game one.
The Titans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and junior Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) knocked in the tying run with a double
down the right field line in the fourth.
In the sixth, back to back RBI singles through the left side from
senior Connor Nell (Powell/Olentangy) and junior Britt Williams
(Massillon/Massillon Jackson) broke the game open and Nell would
later score on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
Westminster would tack a run in the seventh but Sabatino slammed
the door shut there for the win.
In the second game, Westminster scored a run in the first and two
in the second before Mount Union tied the game with three in the
second. The Titans seemed to blow the game wide open with a
five-run fourth to take an 8-3 lead, but again the Raiders would
rally this time with a five-spot of their own in the bottom half of
the frame to tie the game at eight.
Again, Westminster would take the lead with a run in the fifth, but
also again Mount Union would match them then put a two more on the
board in the sixth for the 11-9 win.
Sophomore Matt Tracy (Pittsburgh, PA/Central Catholic), who had
four hits over both games, drove in two, Ferrell along with senior
Alan Krontz (Kent/Field) also each drove in a par.
The Raiders play Sunday at home at 1 pm against Thiel (PA).
