(NEW CONCORD, OH)--Mount Union junior Cody Colly
(Massillon/Massillon Washington) struck out a season-high seven
batters and pitched a complete game, four-hitter in a 5-1 game two
victory that salvaged an Ohio Athletic Conference split against
Muskingum Saturday in New Concord. The Muskies edged out the
Purple Raiders with a 1-0 eight inning win in game one.
The split puts Mount Union at 10-9 overall and 2-4 in conference
play, while Muskingum is 11-11 overall and 2-2 in the OAC.
Colly did not allow an earned run and won his second straight
OAC start to move to 3-1 on the season.
Senior catcher Connor Nell (Powell/Olentangy) and junior
leftfielder Britt Williams (Canton/Massillon Jackson) each
had two hits as the Raiders took advantage of four Muskie
errors to run out to a 5-0 lead in the first five innings.
Mount Union was held to just three hits in the opener that
spoiled a terrific outing by senior pitcher Mark Sabatino
(Mayfield Heights/Mayfield). Sabatino did not allow an earned
run and scattered seven hits over 7.2 innnigs but became the hard
luck loser when Colton Newell legged out a double play ball with
bases loaded that scored Wes Carder, who reached on an error to
start the inning, for the game winner.
Mount Union returns home to host Allegheny (PA) in a
non-conference doubleheader Sunday at 1 pm at 23rd Street Field in
Alliance.
