(PITTSBURGH, PA)--Mount Union's baseball team suffered a 2-1
loss in the opener then came back to score a 3-2 win in game two to
get a split at LaRoche in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday in
Pittsburgh, PA.
Adam Zimmerman drove in the winning run on a single as LaRoche
(16-11) hit four-straight singles with one out in the bottom of the
seventh plating two runs to rally for a 3-2 win.
LaRoche held a 1-0 lead after five innings, before Mount Union
(15-12) tied the game in sixth on a Kyle VonDuyke
(Medina/Medina) sacrifice fly.
The Purple Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the
seventh when Dan Henderson (Canton/GlenOak) started the inning with
a single and came around to score on a Ty Wood
(Hudson/Hudson) double.
Justin Meyers picked up the win in relief for LaRoche, while
Cory Douglass (Independence/Garfield Heights) took the loss for
Mount Union.
In game two, Mount Union got two solid pitching performances
from sophomore Beau Smith (Fredrick, MD/Fredrick) and junior Kyle Moles (Silver Lake/Cuyahoga Falls).
Smith allowed only one hit over the first three innings and
Moles went the final four frames and gave up just one run and three
hits to get his first win of the season.
VonDuyke had two of the Raiders four hits and they scored their
runs on an RBI double from Wood and pushed another across on a
fielding error.
Mount Union finishes this six-game road trip with a pivotal Ohio
Athletic Conference series Wednesday at 1 pm at John Carroll
