Baseball Splits Sunday Twinbill at LaRoche

(PITTSBURGH, PA)--Mount Union's baseball team suffered a 2-1 loss in the opener then came back to score a 3-2 win in game two to get a split at LaRoche in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday in Pittsburgh, PA.

Adam Zimmerman drove in the winning run on a single as LaRoche (16-11) hit four-straight singles with one out in the bottom of the seventh plating two runs to rally for a 3-2 win.

LaRoche held a 1-0 lead after five innings, before Mount Union (15-12) tied the game in sixth on a Kyle VonDuyke (Medina/Medina) sacrifice fly.

The Purple Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the seventh when Dan Henderson (Canton/GlenOak) started the inning with a single and came around to score on a Ty Wood (Hudson/Hudson) double.

Justin Meyers picked up the win in relief for LaRoche, while Cory Douglass (Independence/Garfield Heights) took the loss for Mount Union.

In game two, Mount Union got two solid pitching performances from sophomore Beau Smith (Fredrick, MD/Fredrick) and junior Kyle Moles (Silver Lake/Cuyahoga Falls).

Smith allowed only one hit over the first three innings and Moles went the final four frames and gave up just one run and three hits to get his first win of the season.

VonDuyke had two of the Raiders four hits and they scored their runs on an RBI double from Wood and pushed another across on a fielding error.

Mount Union finishes this six-game road trip with a pivotal Ohio Athletic Conference series Wednesday at 1 pm at John Carroll
