Baseball Gets First OAC Win in Split With Wilmington

(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union pitchers Cody Colly (Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Paul Mariotti (Copley/Copley) combined to hold Wilmington to five runs in a 13-5 Purple Raider win in game two of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance. The Quakers scored a 16-6 victory in game one.

The win snapped a six-game skid for Mount Union and made its record 8-8 overall and 1-3 in the OAC, while Wilmington's win in the first game broke a seven-game slide and left its mark at 2-13 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.

Colly started and scattered eight hits over the first 5.2 innings to improve to 2-1 on the season, while Mariotti had his best outing of the season as he struck out five over the final 3.1 innings to earn the save.

Nick Elliott (Poland/Poland Seminary) drove in three runs on three hits, Connor Nell (Powell/Olentangy) also had three hits and drove in two runs, while Jake DeLuca (Akron/Green), Bobby Huth (Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) each had two RBI as the Raiders scored in all but two innings.

Ferrell also knocked in his team-best fourth home run of the season and including a triple in the first game ran his school-record hit streak up to 24 games.

Wilmington blasted out a season-best 16 runs on 20 hits in the opener as they led 5-1 after two innings before Mount Union rallied to tie the game at five after the fourth inning, but the Quakers out scored the Raiders 11-1 over the final three frames.

Three errors and just six hits cost Mount Union as Nell drove in two runs on two hits, Mike Griffith (Louisville/East Canton) also drove in a pair runs and Ferrell had a triple, three walks and scored three times.

On the mound, the Quakers got a complete game, seven-strikeout effort from Jared Ramsey for the win, while Mark Sabatino (Mayfield Hts/Mayfield) took the loss for the Raiders.

Dan Roncolato drove in five runs on four hits and Bruce Dunlap had four RBI to lead Wilmington.

Mount Union next plays Tuesday, Apr. 6 at 4 pm at Hiram.  The game will be broadcast LIVE and feature LIVE STATS at www.muc.edu/athletics
