(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union pitchers Cody Colly
(Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Paul Mariotti
(Copley/Copley) combined to hold Wilmington to five runs in a 13-5
Purple Raider win in game two of an Ohio Athletic Conference
doubleheader Friday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance. The Quakers
scored a 16-6 victory in game one.
The win snapped a six-game skid for Mount Union and made its
record 8-8 overall and 1-3 in the OAC, while Wilmington's win in
the first game broke a seven-game slide and left its mark at 2-13
overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
Colly started and scattered eight hits over the first 5.2
innings to improve to 2-1 on the season, while Mariotti had his
best outing of the season as he struck out five over the
final 3.1 innings to earn the save.
Nick
Elliott (Poland/Poland Seminary) drove in three runs on
three hits, Connor Nell (Powell/Olentangy) also had three hits
and drove in two runs, while Jake DeLuca
(Akron/Green), Bobby Huth
(Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Greg Ferrell
(Uniontown/Green) each had two RBI as the Raiders scored
in all but two innings.
Ferrell also knocked in his team-best fourth home run of the
season and including a triple in the first game ran his
school-record hit streak up to 24 games.
Wilmington blasted out a season-best 16 runs on 20 hits in the
opener as they led 5-1 after two innings before Mount Union rallied
to tie the game at five after the fourth inning, but the
Quakers out scored the Raiders 11-1 over the final three
frames.
Three errors and just six hits cost Mount Union as Nell drove in
two runs on two hits, Mike Griffith
(Louisville/East Canton) also drove in a pair
runs and Ferrell had a triple, three walks and scored
three times.
On the mound, the Quakers got a complete game, seven-strikeout
effort from Jared Ramsey for the win, while Mark Sabatino
(Mayfield Hts/Mayfield) took the loss for the Raiders.
Dan Roncolato drove in five runs on four hits and Bruce
Dunlap had four RBI to lead Wilmington.
Mount Union next plays Tuesday, Apr. 6 at 4
