ALLIANCE, Ohio—The No. 13 ranked Mount Union women's basketball team defended its home court with a 76-53 victory over Manchester (Ind.) in the championship game of the M Club Shootout. The Purple Raiders (5-0) remain undefeated and extend their regular season winning streak over non-conference opponents to 21 games.
Manchester took an early 6-5 lead, but the 22-4 Mount Union run that ensued allowed the Raiders to lead 37-21 at halftime. Junior Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake), who was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, scored seven points and senior Erin Schmidt (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) scored five points during the run.
LaMattina scored 17 points to go with three rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three three-pointers on the night. Senior Kori Wiedt (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) led all scorers with 19 points.
Junior Tierney Allen (Alliance/Alliance) scored four points, grabbed six rebounds, had three assists and had five steals on her way to also earning all-tournament honors for the Raiders. Allen scored a team-best 13 points in a rout of Allegheny on Friday night.
Erynn Meiklejohn and Becki Lowden were named to the all-tournament team for Manchester. Meiklejohn scored a team-best 12 points against Mount Union and had eight points and nine rebounds Friday against Waynesburg. Lowden scored a team-best 10 points against Waynesburg and had two points against Mount Union.
In the consolation game, Allegheny defeated Waynesburg, 84-74. Heidi Goeller (24 points, 18 rebounds), Erica Restich (24 points), and Daryl Ford (20 points) paced Allegheny. For Waynesburg, Jessi Drayer scored a game-high 28 points.
Mount Union travel to Otterbein next Saturday to open Ohio Athletic Conference play.
