Raider Rally Comes Up Short as Baseball Swept By #3 Marietta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio – A furious rally in the final two innings by Mount Union pushed game one to extra innings but No. 3 ranked Marietta scored three in the top of the ninth and held on for a 10-9 win then won game two 17-2 to sweep an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball series Sunday in Alliance.

Mount Union (9-12, 3-3 OAC) trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when Lee Grosscup (North Canton/Green) started the inning with a double.  Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) followed with a two-run home run then later in the frame Britt Williams (Canton/Massillon Jackson) would hit a two-out RBI double to bring the Raiders to within a run 5-4.

Marietta then seemed to add insurance in the seventh as they tallied two more runs to extend the lead to 7-4.

The Purple Raiders kept the rally going as they tied the game on RBI singles from Craig Knott (Canton/GlenOak) and Ferrell, who would later score the tying run on a fielding error in the Pioneer outfield.  In fact, Mount Union would load the bases with the winning run on third before Marietta ended the inning on a 1-2-3 double play.

The game remained tied at 7 until the top half of the ninth inning as pair of walks and a hit batter would all come around to score, one on a sacrifice fly by Evan Brockmeier and two on a single by Britt Meador.

Mount Union was not done as they tried to mount another comeback as Ferrell hit his second two-run homer of the game but Pioneer reliever Austin Blaski got a fly-out and two strikeouts to end the threat and get the win.

Ferrell finished with four hits, drove in five runs and scored four times while Jimmy Dobran (Poland/Poland Seminary) and Grosscup each had three hits for the Raiders.

There was no drama in the second game as the Pioneers scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to a 17-2 victory to take the doubleheader and move to 6-0 in the OAC and 21-2 overall.

Knott had a solo home run in the seventh and had two hits for the game to lead Mount Union.

The Raiders go on the road Wednesday for an OAC doubleheader at Baldwin-Wallace. First pitch from Berea is at 1 pm.
