Three Raider Pitchers Stop Streaks to Salvage Baseball Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Three Mount Union pitchers combined to hold John Carroll to five hits in a 7-2 game two win which salvaged an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball split after the Blue Streaks won game one, 10-3 Thursday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

Purple Raider pitchers in freshman Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic), sophomore Trent Vallinger (Poland/Poland Seminary) and senior Cody Colly (Massillon/Massillon Washington) combined to scatter five hits and strike out six to lead Mount Union.

Murzynski allowed only three hits and one earned run through 5.1 innings to pick up the win, Vallinger did not allow a hit in 1/3 inning of work while Colly allowed only two hits over the final 3.1 innings to get his second save of the season.

This was all more enough for a Mount Union offense that posted double digit hits for the sixth time over the last nine games as the Raiders got seven runs on 14 hits.

Senior designated hitter Britt Williams (Canton/Massillon Jackson) hit three doubles and scored twice while junior Craig Knott (Canton/GlenOak) along with freshmen C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) and Lee Grosscup (North Canton/Green) each drove in two runs.

John Carroll was up 1-0 and starter Pat O'Brien had faced the minimum through 3.2 innings but with two outs in the fourth, senior Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) started things with a double then two more doubles by Knott and freshman Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) gave Mount Union a 2-1 lead.

The Raiders tacked on another run in the fifth as Williams started off the inning with a walk then an errand pick off attempt got him all the way to third base and promply Stotler drove him in on a single to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Blue Streaks got one back in the sixth before Mount Union blew the game open in the seventh as it started the inning with five-straight hits -- the last of those being a two-RBI single by Grosscup.  The Raiders put four more runs on the board and Colly made it stick for the 7-2 final.

In game one, John Carroll belted out 12 hits, scored 10 runs while pitcher Tom Schraberl gave up only two runs and struck out eight over six innings to get the win in a 10-3 Blue Streak victory.

Mount Union was plauged by four errors in the field while at the plate only Ferrell and freshman Jimmy Dobran (Poland/Poland Seminary) had multi-hit games.

Ferrell went 3-for-4 and crushed his fifth homer of the season while Dobran had a pair of hits.

Mount Union will get right back to conference play Friday as they are scheduled to play a pair of OAC games against Capital at Beavers Field in Lancaster, Ohio.  There will be an audio broadcast and LIVE STATS of the games at http://athletics.mountunion.edu
