Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union took another step toward getting back to the OAC Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2008 with 8-2 and 12-0 victories over Ohio Northern Saturday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
The sweep allows the Purple Raiders to keep pace with John Carroll as the teams are tied at 9-5 in third in the conference standings in the race for a top four spot and a bid in the four-team OAC Tournament.
Mount Union can clinch a spot with two wins against Capital Sunday as those teams play at 1 pm at Clowson Field in Columbus.
Against Ohio Northern, senior Cody Colly (Massillon/Massillon Washington) took a no hitter into the fifth inning and got the first two outs before Mike Hoelzel had a single. He then went the rest of the way giving up just four more hits to get the complete game victory and move to 5-2 on the season.
Jimmy Dobran (Poland/Poland Seminary), Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Craig Knott (Canton/GlenOak) each drove in two runs as Mount Union ran out to a 5-0 lead after five innings and never looked back.
Carlino and Knott stayed along with C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) stayed hot in game two as Carlino was 3-for-4 and drove in four runs while Knott and Stotler each hit in three runs.
In total the Raiders belted out 16 hits and scored two runs in the first inning then blew the game open with a five-run third to go up 7-0 and the rout was on as they tacked on three more in the sixth and two in the seventh for a 12-0 win.
Mount Union also stole a season-high six bases in the game with Dobran getting two of those.
It was all more than enough offense for Matt Murzynski (Mentor/Lake Catholic) who scattered four hits over the first seven innings for the win then combined on the shutout with Mike Horning (Avon/Avon) and Joe Bowers (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) out of the bullpen.
