Mount Union Falls to #9 Heidelberg in First Round of OAC Baseball Tournament; Raiders Play John Carroll Friday at 3:30 pm

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Third seeded Mount Union fell to No. 9 in the nation and second seeded Heidelberg, 14-5, in the first round of the 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday night at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta.

Heidelberg (32-9) advances to take on No. 1 in the nation and top-seeded Marietta (36-3), a 4-1 winner over No. 4 seed John Carroll in Thursday's other game, Friday at noon.

Mount Union (17-19) and John Carroll (18-19) meet in an elimination game at 3:30 pm Friday.

The Student Princes started things early as Ricardo Lizcano hit a solo home run to right field in the first inning.

Heidelberg blew the game open in the third with five runs -- two on an RBI double with bases loaded by Jason Lash then a three-run home run from Alex Monroe, his first of the season.

The Berg made it 7-0 with a run in the fifth on an RBI triple from Andrew Buelow.

The Raiders got on the board in the sixth as Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) hit his first homer of the season a three run shot to close the gap to 7-3.

Heidelberg made the Mount Union rally short lived as it got those three runs back in the bottom of sixth to push the lead to 10-3, then tacked on another run in the seventh to lead 11-3.

Mount Union pushed two more runs across in the eighth on a two-RBI single by Matt Tracy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic).

The Berg finished scoring with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 14-5 final.

Monroe finished the game 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Lash drove in three runs and Gar Keen had four hits as Heidelberg had 17 total hits.

Carlino, Tracy and Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) each had two hits to lead the Raiders.

Nathan James allowed just five hits and struck out three over the first 6.1 innings to get the win for the Student Princes.

Cody Colly (Massillon/Massillon Washington) fell to 5-4 on the season as he allowed six runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings for the Raiders.
