TIFFIN, Ohio -- Mount Union scored an 8-4 win in game one at No. 9 in the nation Heidelberg Saturday in Tiffin to lock up the No. 3 seed in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament.  The Purple Raiders fell in the nightcap, 5-3.

In the opener, Beau Smith (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scattered eight hits over seven innings to pick up the compete game victory and move to 4-3 on season for Mount Union.

Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs including two on a first inning home run to right center.

Heidelberg got a run back in the bottom of the first but the Raiders blew the game open with a five run third to go up 7-1.  The Berg scored a run in third but Mount Union countered with another run in the fifth to stay ahead 8-2.  Heidelberg put two more runs up in the fifth to close to 8-4 but Smith ducked and dodged his way out of trouble the final two innings to preserve the win.

In game two it was Heidelberg that ducked and dodged as Mount Union had 13 hits, runners on base in seven different innings but managed only three runs and stranded 11 on base in a 5-3 loss.

At the plate, Matt Tracy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) had three hits while C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) and Ty Wood (Hudson/Hudson) each had two hits to pace the Raiders.

Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) took the loss for Mount Union while Nathan James picked up the win and Andy Lowe the save for Heidelberg.

Mount Union (17-18 overall) finishes up OAC play with an 11-7 record, while Heidelberg (31-9 overall) is the No. 2 seed for next week's tournament at 12-6 in the OAC.  The two teams will open the OAC Tournament against each other this coming Thursday (May 12) at 3:30 pm at Don Schaly Stadium in Marietta.
