Purple Raiders Win Three, Drop One at Hiram Invitational

HIRAM, Ohio—The Mount Union volleyball team went 3-1 at the Hiram Invitational over the weekend. The Purple Raiders (10-4) recorded victories over Geneva (Pa.), Kalamazoo (Mich.), and Otterbein while they lost to host Hiram.

The Purple Raiders opened the event on Friday with a five set decision over Geneva (15-25, 25-18, 25-22, 26-28, 15-6). They were swept by Hiram in their second match of the night (16-25, 18-25, 23-25). The host Terriers were the only unbeaten team at the invitational. They have extended their winning streak to nine matches and have won 27 consecutive sets.

Mount Union returned on Saturday to capture a pair of wins. They defeated Kalamazoo in straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-12). Their final match of the event was against fellow Ohio Athletic Conference member Otterbein. The Purple Raiders took the match in four sets with a 25-14, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23 decision.

Julie Radigan (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) was named to the all-tournament team for the third consecutive week. The senior setter finished the weekend with 121 assists, 23 digs, and 11 kills. She had a weekend-best 46 assists and 13 digs against Geneva.

Taylor Webb (Geneva/Geneva) continued her strong play with a team-best 46 kills with 15 against Hiram. Melanie Patterson (Mentor/Lake Catholic) had 26 kills, Maya Brown (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) had 23 kills, and Nicole Snyder (Mentor/Lake Catholic) had 21 kills on the weekend.

Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) led the Purple Raiders with 71 digs. Lauren Mastroine (Orrville/Orrville) added 51 digs and Christine Frazier (Westerville/Westerville North) had 47 digs. Deanna Glass (Medina/Medina) had a team-best 14 total blocks and added 16 kills.

Mount Union heads to Pittsburgh, Pa. next weekend to participate in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Friday and Saturday. They will face Bridgewater (Va.) and Penn State-Behrend (Pa.) on Friday.
